Fibre Identification

Quick, accurate identification of suspect fibres is critical for ensuring site safety and legal compliance. Whether you’ve encountered suspect material during routine works or require confirmation following an asbestos survey, laboratory fibre identification helps you take immediate, informed action.

At Envirochem, we provide UKAS-accredited fibre identification services (Testing No. 1227) using standardised polarised light microscopy (PLM) techniques. Our service is fast, reliable, and supported by expert interpretation, ensuring you understand the risks, next steps, and any required remedial actions.

What We Test For

Fibre identification is used to determine the presence (or absence) of asbestos in suspect materials. We can analyse a wide range of sample types, including:

  • Cement-based materials
  • Sprayed coatings, lagging, and insulation board
  • Floor tiles and bitumen adhesives
  • Artex and decorative coatings
  • Gaskets, ropes, and textiles
  • Soils and loose debris
  • Dust samples for background contamination checks

We test for all six regulated forms of asbestos: chrysotile (white), amosite (brown), crocidolite (blue), as well as the less common anthophyllite, tremolite, and actinolite. Non-asbestos fibres (e.g. mineral wool or synthetic fibres) can also be identified on request.

Our Process

Samples can be submitted directly to our laboratory by post or hand delivery. For urgent analysis, we offer same-day or next-day turnaround, with results delivered electronically. If you need assistance collecting samples, we can arrange for a qualified surveyor to attend your site safely and in accordance with HSG264.

Each sample is examined under polarised light microscopy in line with UKAS-accredited procedures. Where asbestos is present, the fibre type(s) will be confirmed and documented in a formal certificate of analysis. Our consultants are always on hand to interpret results and advise on further actions, such as removal, air testing, or reinspection.

When Is Fibre Identification Required?

You may need fibre identification testing if:

  • A suspect material is encountered during refurbishment or demolition works
  • You need to verify whether asbestos is present in a specific building material
  • Background dust or debris needs to be checked for asbestos contamination
  • Asbestos-containing materials have been disturbed and confirmation is required
  • Historical materials (e.g. from storage or skip waste) require classification

If you’re unsure whether testing is required, we can advise on a proportionate, risk-based approach in line with current regulations.

Why Choose Envirochem?

Envirochem combines over 30 years’ experience in asbestos analysis with the technical precision of a UKAS-accredited laboratory (No. 1227). We specialise in fast, accurate fibre identification using polarised light microscopy (PLM) in accordance with HSG248, helping you quickly determine whether a material contains asbestos and, if so, which type.

We understand that fibre identification is not just a box-ticking exercise, but the first step in making informed, legally compliant decisions about asbestos exposure risk. Whether you’re confirming the presence of asbestos before refurbishment works, validating removal outcomes, or managing suspect materials on site, we provide the clarity you need to move forward safely and responsibly.

Our analysts are trained in both material identification and the real-world implications of each fibre type. We ensure you receive accurate, actionable information that feeds into your wider asbestos strategy, whether that involves removal, encapsulation, or ongoing monitoring.

Because we operate our own in-house lab, we maintain full control over sample handling, turnaround times, and reporting quality. Our results are trusted by licensed asbestos contractors, housing associations, and construction teams alike, ensuring your decision-making is supported by evidence that stands up to regulatory scrutiny.
